Handmade piece of furniture being good cared could stay a long time, even centuries. Clean the dust often, always in the knot direction, be careful not to wet the non sealed wood, for it not to stuff.
Advice to take off mark in the wood:
We are going to say the most effective sistem to clean the mark that can be formed on the wood. They are applicable to finished piece of furniture that need to be restored, recovering the original wood appearance, striping the paint from the wood.
The mark can be caused by different circumstances and agents, as grease, water, coffee, ink, alcohol… In fact, any kind of liquids could be dangerous for the wood. We must treat along the total surface not only the marked one, because in this case the final result could be worse than the initial mark. We will clean with water the used substance.
Now, we are going to explain the most usual marks and the way to clean them:
- Iron . they are caused by iron acid, the colorants made on ferrous salts and by the abrasives as the steel wool. Oxygenated water of 30 vol. must be passed several times on the mark, diluted in water in equally parts, and let it dry up. Make the last wipe with liquid ammonia diluted in water, in a proportion of 1/3.
- Grease or oil. Make a pasty mixture with magnesium and vinegar or petrol. Put on the mark a fine coat of this mixture and let it to dry. Then, plane and repeat until the mark disappears.
- Ink. For common ink, prepare a solution mixing a litre of hot water and 40 gr. of oxalic acid. For inks made on tared colorants, use oxygenated water of 30 vol. mixed in equally parts with water. After this, wash it with hot water.
- Whitewash, plaster or croncrete. We have this marks when we don´t cover our pieces of furniture while we are using this substances. Take off the mark with a no much sharped bricklayer´s trowel, a nylon brush and abrasive fine paper. After this, wash with acetic acid diluted in water, in proportion 1/10.
- Glue. If it´s not too hard, it´s easy to clean with hot water, but if glue marks are old and hardened, you must apply hydrochloric acid diluted in water in proportion 1/10 and after this plane it.
- Unknown substances,no identitified. We try to clean them with a pasty mixture of sodium carbonate, calcium carbonate and a little water. The mixture has to dry and then the surface has to be polished with wax or wood oil.
Home remedy to clean marks on the wood.
There are several home remedy to get rid of marks in the pieces of furnitures and they all are innocuous.
- Varnish marks. Spray oven-cleaner liquid on the damaged zone, wait 5 minutes and rub with a piece of cloth wet in alcohol, use then a dry cloth and polish.
- To eliminate glue papers and stikers. Rub softly with a old scourer impregnated in detergent or grease-cleaner soap. Another solution is to rub with a piece of cloth impregnate in vinegar and after this take off by hands.
- To polish a piece of furniture with mark. Pass a clean piece of cloth wet in boiling milk. When it is dry pass a cotton piece of cloth and a little of olive oil or teak one.
- To eliminate a mark of a very hot plate. Apply a mixture made on salt and olive oil in equally parts, let it acts during 5 hours, after that take off with a piece of cloth and apply then a solution made on oil and petrol in equally parts. Let it gets into and finally clean with a dry piece of cloth.
- To eliminate cigarrettes burns. If the mark is not very deep, rub with a piece of cloth and mayonnaise sauce, let it gets into and clean with a dry piece of cloth. If the burn is deep and is marked, scrape slowly with a knife or piece of glass, stuff the hole with wax coloured with pigment dust. After this,pass around the mark a piece of cloth impregned in polish oil for pieces of furniture.
- To eliminate the candles leftovers. Burn the wax with a hair-dryer and take off with an absorbent paper or a bricklayer´s trowel. After this,apply teak oil and finally rub with a dry piece of cloth.
